Molluscum contagiosum is a common and relatively harmless viral skin infection. It is a contagious infection and can be passed on from direct contact from another individual. It is more common in children and young adults, but can occur at any age. Rashes usually disappear spontaneously within 6-18 months. Sometimes this period can be longer. The rashes may appear red and inflamed before disappearing, and may leave small sunken marks on the skin after healing. Cryotherapy, electrocautery and curettage or extirpation methods can be used in its treatment.
