Home PREGNANCY DERMATOSES AND ITCHING

Pruritus, which is common during pregnancy, may be a physiological event, or a symptom of pregnancy specific skin diseases (gestational dermatosis) or atopy, iron deficiency, kidney, liver, thyroid gland diseases or some cancers. In 20% of pregnant women with itching, the cause cannot be found. Physiological itching is often seen in the abdomen and in the last months of pregnancy, when the skin is most stretched. Sometimes it can also occur in the scalp or genital area. Expectant mothers with itching should be evaluated by a dermatologist and the cause of itching should be investigated. Hives like itchy rash along the pregnancy cracks seen in the abdomen, hips and hip regions in the period close to the birth, especially in the 3rd trimester, are called pregnancy hives or urticaria. In this situation, where the risk of preterm birth is very low, there is no serious risk in terms of mother and baby health. However, since the incident consists of a hypersensitivity that develops as a result of the incompatibility of antigens transferred from the mother and father to the baby, it carries the risk of recurrence in other pregnancies. Apart from topical cortisone creams and some special antihistamines such as cetrizine or diphenhydramine suitable for pregnancy, in some severe cases, short-term systemic steroid (cortisone) treatment may be required.
